国際石油資本（メジャー）の英BP、ジョン・ブラウン最高経営責任者（CEO）は1日、カナダ人男性ジェフ・シュバリエ氏との交際に関する新聞報道をめぐる法廷闘争で敗訴したため、辞任した。

ＢＰのウェブサイトによると、英裁判所は大衆紙デーリー・メールやメール・オン・サンデー、イブニング・スタンダードを発行しているアソシエーテッド・ニュースペーパーズ社に対し、ブラウン氏と元交際相手のカナダ人男性ジェフ・シェバリエ氏の関係をめぐる報道を認めた。シェバリエ氏はアソシエーテッド社にブラウン氏との交際を売り込んでいた。
ブラウン氏は報道差し止め訴訟を起こしたが、初めて法廷でシェバリエ氏と顔を合わせた際に偽証した。同氏は１日に発表した声明で、シェバリエ氏と４年間にわたって交際していたことを認め、偽証を謝罪した。
ブラウン氏はシェバリエ氏に、社内の資産を「限定的に」使用させた職権乱用の疑いも持たれていた。ただ、サザーランドＢＰ会長によると、取締役会がブラウン氏の要請を受けて調査したところ、疑惑を裏付ける証拠はなかったという。取締役会はブラウン氏の辞表を受理し、同氏の辞任に「深い遺憾」（会長）を表明した。

同日付夕刊紙などが、ブラウン氏が、２７歳とされるカナダ人男性パートナーに企業秘密の漏洩（ろうえい）や便宜供与をしていた可能性があると報道。こうした内容の報道を年初から差し止めようとしていたブラウン氏は今回、声明を出し、この男性と４年にわたって同性愛関係があったことを認めつつ、「仕事とは切り離してきた」と企業経営とのかかわりを否定した。ただ、報道の具体化のほか、差し止め訴訟での偽証問題も出てきたため、７月末に予定していた退任を約３カ月前倒しした。後任には生産や探査部門を担当するヘイワード氏が就いた。

"For the past 41 years of my career at BP I have kept my private life separate from my business life.
I have always regarded my sexuality as a personal matter, to be kept private," Lord Browne said in a statement.
"It is a matter of personal disappointment that a newspaper group has now decided that allegations about my personal life should be made public.
"Legal documents have been disclosed today containing allegations about me and my personal life.
"I wish to acknowledge that I did formerly have a four-year relationship with Jeff Chevalier.

The revelations have done little damage to BP's share price, with analysts saying that the company was well prepared for a handover in power.
BP's shares were 1.5 pence, or 0.3%, higher at 564.5p in early afternoon trading in London.
