Oh, it's two men. Fantastic. 『ブラザーズ&シスターズ』でゲイの結婚式

米ABCで放映している人気ドラマ、『ブラザーズ&シスターズ』（Brothers & Sisters）におけるゲイ・カップルの「結婚式」が話題になっている。

セレモニーを挙げたのは、ケヴィン・ウォーカー（マシュー・リス）とスコッティ・ワンダル（ルーク・マクファーレン）。厳密には同性婚（same-sex marrige、アメリカではマサチューセッツ州のみ合法)ではなくて、ドメスティック・パートナー（domestic partnership）の関係／契約を公式に結んだ、ということだ。

Spotting a prop woman with the topper in her hands, Matthew Rhys — whose character, Kevin, weds Sunday in the show's Season 2 finale — calls her over. "Is it a man and a woman?" he asks. Getting a closer look, Rhys smiles and says, "Oh, it's two men. Fantastic. There were jokes made that they wouldn't be able to find two men, so they'd have to doctor the woman by adding a moustache."

This is no typical TV wedding. It's a gay commitment ceremony — the first same-sex union on American network TV between series regulars.

"It's all very progressive, evolved and about time," says Rhys.

"It's a milestone, and I was really quite pleased that I got to be a part of it," echoes Calista Flockhart, who plays Kevin's big sis Kitty.

記事によると、アメリカの（3大もしくは4大）ネットワーク局で放映しているテレビシリーズのレギュラーキャラクターが同性パートナーシップを結び「宣誓式」を行ったのは、これが初めてなのだという。だから「画期的出来事」（milestone）であり、「最高にロマンティック」（pretty romantic）という登場人物のセリフが生きてくる。

で、『ブラザーズ&シスターズ』はまだ観たことがなかったので、Wikipedia で内容をチェックしていたところ、このドラマがゲイ・フレンドリーであるのは言うまでもないが、だからこそケヴィンとスコッティの「関係」も（当たり前ことだが）丁寧に描かれているようだ。
例えば、

Scotty, who was more flamboyant than Kevin, quickly deduced Kevin's homosexuality and accused him of being ashamed and trying to "pass" for heterosexual. Kevin was irritated by Scotty's insinuations, but after Sarah invited Scotty to the Walker home for a pool party, Kevin began to let his guard down.

最初、弁護士であるケヴィンは自分が同性愛者であることを恥ずかしいと思っていて、異性愛者として／のように振舞っていた──「パス」していた。それをスコッティは我慢ならなかった。そういった考えかたの違いがまず二人にはあった。
さらにケヴィンとスコッティがドメスティック・パートナーを結ぶにあたって、多分ストレートであるロブ・ロウ演じるロバート・マキャリスターは上記のように「最高にロマンティック」と二人を賞賛したが、実は彼らがパートナーになるきっかけの一つとして、「健康保険」（health insurance）という単なるロマンチックなだけではない現実的な生活上の問題が横たわっていたことも、きっちりと触れている。

さすがエミー賞受賞のドラマだけあるな、と思った。早速観てみようっと。
