There is plenty of unfinished business in California, from structurally unbalanced budgets to a bloated and dysfunctional prison system. In each case, Schwarzenegger could have done more in his first term
and must make them priorities in his second. Each of those messes presented an opportunity for challenger Angelides to offer courageous and specific remedies. His options were too thick with rhetoric, too thin with plausible solutions.
In Schwarzenegger, Californians have a governor who can listen, focus and lead. He deserves to be re-elected on Nov. 7.

サンフランシスコ・クロニクルはシュワルツェネッガー知事の「不適切な発言」を問題にするも、LA Times 同様、知事のこれまで行ってきた業績を挙げ、評価のポイントを具体的に示す。「財政は保守、社会問題においては中道路線、環境対策には進歩的」という知事の自己評価も引用している。
そして対抗馬の民主党のフィル・アンジェリデス州財務長官（Treasurer Phil Angelides）に対しては、党利党策を超えた政治力を発揮できるかどうか疑問を投げかけている。
一方、ロサンゼルス市長アントニオ・ビヤライゴーサ氏（Antonio Villaraigosa）とサンフランシスコ市長ギャヴィン・ニューマン氏（Gavin Newsom）は、アンジェリデス氏支持を表明、ホットなキャンペーンを繰り広げている。

ピントがブレたりアングルも良くないのだが、ニューサム市長のこの「力強い」演説は、なかなか魅せてくれる。女性の権利、人権、LGBT（レズビアン、ゲイ、バイセクシュアル、トランスジェンダー）の権利などを訴える場面もあって注目したい。さすがサンフランシスコ市長の発言だ。しかも俳優のようにハンサムで立ち居振る舞いそして声までがカッコ良すぎる。最高だ。

ニューサム市長は2004年2月、ゲイ・カップルに結婚証明書を発行し同性婚を実施した（ただし2004年8月にカリフォルニア州最高裁でサンフランシスコの結婚証明書は無効とされた）ことは有名だろう。『We Do: A Celebration of Gay and Lesbian Marriage』の序文も彼は書いている。

２期目を目指すシュワルツェネッガー知事は現在、知事選挙で対立候補のアンジェリデス州財務長官（民主党）と争っている。
長官側は選挙キャンペーンの一環として、カリフォルニア州で人気の高くないブッシュ大統領と、同じ共和党のシュワルツェネッガー知事を結びつけるようなテレビ広告を行っていた。
これに対し知事は「私をジョージ・ブッシュと関連付けるのは、私をオスカー（アカデミー賞）と関連付けるようなもの」とコメント。「私は我が道を行く人間だ。そんな関連付けは馬鹿げている」と述べた。
１１月の知事選で再選を目指す米カリフォルニア州のシュワルツェネッガー知事（共和党）が非公開の場でヒスパニックの民族性を揶揄（やゆ）したとも受け取れる発言を行ったことを示す音声ファイルが流出した。一騎打ちを演じているアンジェリデス候補（民主党）は、ここぞとばかりテープの公開を要求。しかし、シュワルツェネッガー知事は「違法に入手されたものだ」と反撃するなど論争は泥仕合化している。
この音声ファイルの内容は９月８日付のロサンゼルス・タイムズ紙でスクープされた。記事でやり玉に挙げられたのは、あるヒスパニック系女性州議会議員（共和）の性格や気性について「あいつらはみんな、とてもホット（熱い、激しいの意味）なんだ」と評した後、「あいつらは黒人の血とラティーノの血が混じっていて、それでそうなるんだ」と述べたくだり。
カリフォルニア州のArnold Schwarzenegger知事の「失言」を収めた音声ファイルが流出した件に関し、米国時間9月12日、同知事に対抗する民主党知事候補の Phil Angelides氏 陣営が、問題のファイルは同氏の側近が入手したものだと認めた。この行為をめぐっては、音声ファイルが保存されていたウェブサイトがハッキングされたとの疑いも持ち上がっている。

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Phil Angelides suggestion this week that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger once turned a blind eye or even defended South African apartheid, has been forcefully refuted by the governor's campaign -- and by bodybuilding guru Ben Weider, who says as a bodybuilder, Schawarzenegger actually stood up for civil rights in South Africa.
Angelides made the statements about the former Mr. Olympia Tuesday in front of an African American audience, claiming that "there have been news reports that have indicated the governor might have made comments defending apartheid." He added, "Now, you can make a judgment about those."
The Democratic state treasurer apparently was referring to a report in a biography of Schwarzenegger by author Wendy Leigh, which relied on comments from African American bodybuilder Rick Wayne. "When they discussed apartheid, Arnold said he thought South Africa was right, saying things like, 'If you gave these blacks a country to run, they would run it down the tube,'" Wayne says, according to the book.
