アンゲラ・メルケル率いる野党キリスト教民主同盟（CDU）の優位が伝えられているドイツ総選挙であるが、選挙戦終盤において、ゲアハルト・シュレーダー首相率いる社会民主党（SPD）の支持も、じわじわと上昇してきている。
混戦が予想される──何より有権者の約3分の1がまだ投票先を決めていないからだ。

独世論調査機関「アレンスバッハ」によると、現在、野党連合CDU/CSU-FDP（キリスト教民主党／キリスト教社会同盟、自由民主党）への支持率は48.7％。一方、与党連合SPD-Greens（社会民主党、緑の党）への支持率は40.1％。メルケル陣営優位には変わりはないが、それでも過半数には届かない。
そこで、CDUとSPDの「大連立」（grand coalition）という「最もありそうな」シナリオが導かれるのであるが、Expatica は別のシナリオも紹介している。
すなわちSPDとFDPとの連立である。

FDP chief Guido Westerwelle vows he will not join a Schroeder government but his position in the party is wobbly and he could be swept from office after elections.
In any case, most polls show no majority for an SPD-Greens-FDP government. Allensbach gives such an alliance 47.1 per cent.
FDPの党首、「我らが」ギド・ヴェスターヴェレは、CDUと連立を目指しており、SPDとの連立はしないと明言している。
しかしヴェスターヴェレのポジションは、党内でフラついており（wobbly）、選挙後、退陣させられるかもしれないという観測も囁かれている（えーー）。もっとも、仮に、SPD-Greens-FDP という連立が成立しても、47.1％の支持という試算だ。
さらにSPDと左派政党（The Left Party）との連立も考えられるが、中道寄りの（moderates）SPDメンバーと、SPD左派離反組＆旧東ドイツ共産党系の左派政党では、両者の間に「反発」が伴うこと必須である──したがって、この連立も実現が難しそうだ。
ということで、FDPが政権入りしてヴェスターヴェレ党首が閣僚入りする最善の方法は、メルケル党首へのさらなる支持率アップを計り、CDU/CSU-FDPの連立を成功させることだ。
イギリスのフィナンシャル・タイムズは、ドイツ初の女性首相誕生というメルケル党首が持っている「ジェンダー・カード」（gender card）が有利に働くのではないか、と指摘している。
