僕にとって、一番影響を受けた人物がスーザン・ソンタグだと「断言」できる。
高校生のころ、筑摩書房から出ていた『高校生のための文章読本』で彼女の『隠喩としての病』を読んだのが最初だ。下の文章に痺れた。
ある現象を癌と名附けるのは、暴力の行使を誘うにも等しい。政治の議論に癌を持ちだすのは宿命論を助長し、「強硬」手段の採択を促すようなものである──それに、この病気は必ず死に至るとの俗説をさらに根強くしたりもする。病気の概念がまったく無害ということはありえないのだ。それどころか、癌の隠喩そのものがどことなく集団虐殺を思わせるとの議論も成り立つように思われる。勿論、いずれかの政治観のみがこの隠喩を独占するというのではない。トロツキーはスターリン主義をさしてマルクス主義の癌と呼び、中国では最近四人組が「中国の癌」ということになった。ジョン・ディーンはウォーターゲイト事件をニクソンに説明して、「内部に癌があります──大統領のすぐ近くに──しかも、大きくなっています」と述べた。アラブ陣営の論説のなかに中心的な隠喩となっているのは──イスラエル国民は過去二十年に互って毎日ラジオでそれを聞かされてきたのである──イスラエルは「アラブ世界の心臓部に救う癌」である、「中近東の癌」であるという類のものであるし、一九七六年八月、レバノン・キリスト教右派勢力を率いてタル・ザータルのパレスチナ難民キャンプを攻撃した某将校など、このキャンプを「レバノン体内の癌」と決めつけた。憤怒を表したい人々にとって、癌の隠喩はまことに抗いがたいものらしい。
ソンタグの文章で、ロラン・バルトやベンヤミン、レニー・リーフェンシュタール、ゴダール（は性に合わなかったが）、シオラン、ダイアン・アーバスなんかを知ったようなものだ。
デリダには悪いが、デリダがいない世界よりも、ソンタグがいない世界に生きることのほうが、なんか心細い。

In her piece Against Interpretation, the analytical writer worried that critical analysis interfered with art's ``incantatory, magical'' power.

She did more recently call her lesbian relationships an "open secret" in an essay she wrote for The New Yorker. She had a long-term relationship with the dancer Lucinda Childs, who became the focus of Sontag's film "Unguided Tour." Later, she had a relationship with photographer Annie Leibovitz. Sontag wrote the introduction to Leibovitz's book of portraits "Women."
In addition to "Notes on Camp," her gay-themed writings include works about AIDS: "The Way We Live Now" and "AIDS and Its Metaphors."
