フレデリック・フォーサイス、新作『アフガン』を語る

『ジャッカルの日』や『オデッサ・ファイル』などで著名なフレデリック・フォーサイス（Frederick Forsyth、1938年生まれ）が、新作『The Afghan』を発表し話題を呼んでいる。

「アフガン」は米中枢同時テロ直前までを舞台に描いた前作「アヴェンジャー」（２００３年）に続く形で、同時テロ後の国際テロ組織、アルカーイダとの戦いに焦点を当てた。事実の裏側もうかがわせながら、ニュース記事を読むような現実感にあふれている。

　話は昨年７月のロンドンでの同時テロ事件から始まり、事実と虚構の区別がつかない独特の筆致で進む。米英の情報機関はアルカーイダが大規模なテロ計画を進めていることを察知するものの、標的や時期、手口は不明で、２人の「アフガン」を使って大胆な作戦に挑むという筋書きだ。

　現在はロンドン北郊のハートフォードシャー州に住むフォーサイス氏も６８歳。だが、保守派の立場から拡大欧州の基本法となる欧州憲法に反対するキャンペーンを展開したり、ＢＢＣテレビで米英のテロ対策の不十分さを糾弾するなど、国際情勢を追い続ける意欲は衰えていないようだ。

In The Afghan he has a new recipe for the terrorists: an attack by sea, expertly orchestrated and camouflaged, the weapon a tanker filled with liquid petroleum gas, invisible on discharge and capable of creating a conflagration 30 times greater than Hiroshima. To thwart this plot falls to one man, a former SAS and Parachute Regiment colonel with a swarthy complexion and fluent Arabic who is sent to infiltrate al-Qaeda, or “AQ” as FF assures us it is known in SIS.

And there you get to the nub of it. The Afghan is expertly plotted, awash with jargon and detailed information on munitions, the shipping trade, the geography and recent history of central and southeast Asia, with a brave, self-sacrificing hero. But it never for one moment comes remotely alive.

This is a world in which spooks still congratulate one another in Brooks’s, the London club; where “C” is “steely in his silences”, people still say “there’s a flap on”, and women SIS agents went to Cheltenham Ladies’ College.

Maybe, God help us, some of it is true. But the Forsyth world is one in which Brits (and Yanks) are born with stiff upper lips that are never tempted to tremble as George Smiley’s was when faced with Anne’s adultery in the vastly more credible, flawed and human le Carré incarnation of the secret world.
