４月９、１０日両日に行われたイタリア総選挙は、プロディ元首相率いる野党・中道左派連合が、ベルルスコーニ首相率いる与党・中道右派を上下両院ともに制し、５年ぶりの政権交代が確実となった。
イタリア議会（上院・改選議席３１５、下院・定数６３０）の総選挙は１１日夕（日本時間１２日未明）、上下院の議席が確定し、プロディ元首相の中道左派連合がベルルスコーニ首相の中道右派連合を両院で抑え、５年ぶりの政権交代を決めた。
内務省発表の確定議席によると、プロディ元首相の中道左派連合「ユニオン」は上院１５８、下院３４８。ベルルスコーニ首相の中道右派連合「自由の家」は上院１５６、下院２８１。その他が上下院で各１。投票率は８３．６％だった。

内務省が十一日午前三時半に発表した最終結果では、下院は「団結」が得票率４９・８０５％で三百四十一議席を獲得。「自由の家」が４９・７３９％で二百七十七議席となり、残る在外県の十二議席すべてを中道右派が占めても、野党・中道左派の勝利となることが確定した。
一方、上院は「自由の家」が百五十五議席に対し、「団結」は百五十四議席だったが、十一日午前の開票９０％の段階で残る在外選挙区の六議席のうち「団結」が五議席前後を獲得することが確実となり、上院でも「団結」の勝利が確定的になった。
プローディ氏は同日午前一時過ぎ、ローマ市内サント・アポストリ通りの「団結」本部前の仮設舞台から数千人の支持者を前に、「ページはめくられた。われわれの計画を実施し、イタリアを変えるために一緒に働く必要がある」と、勝利を宣言した。

Again, assuming that his coalition will take and keep power, he will steer Italy back towards a closer relationship with the European Union and away from the US. He strongly opposed the invasion of Iraq and expressed his view in 2004 that Europe might have prevented it.
"If Europe had been present and united, I believe we would not have seen the war on Iraq," he said.
You can discount that as the maybe unrealistic belief of a Euro federalist but of his conviction that Europe does better when it does things together, there is no doubt. He strongly supported the development of the euro, the proposed constitution, which was voted down by France and the Netherlands, and a common European foreign policy.

そして中道左派は、シビルパートナーシップ法の導入を目指すなど、LGBTの権利を擁護している。ゲイ・コミュニティにとって、プロディ氏の勝利はグッドニュースだ。

The results are good news for the gay community as Signor Prodi has promised to change Italy including introducing a civil partnership law.
Official results showed a narrow gap of 49.8% for Signor Prodi's coalition against Signor Berlusconi's 49.7% in the lower house, and 158 Senate seats for the left, beating the right's 156 in the upper house.
Signor Prodi told supporters: “We have won. We have to start working to unite Italy. Now we have to focus in order to change Italy. We have to start growing again."
しかも今回の総選挙では、以前も紹介したトランスジェンダーの Vladimir Luxuria 氏をはじめ、５人のLGBTの候補者が当選した。

Not only it is likely that the government will be formed by the political parties backing legal recognition for same-sex unions, but thers is also a significant increase in visibility of LGBT people in the Italian politics, five LGBT people were elcted to the both houses of the Italian Parliament:
- Gianpaolo Silvestri (a gay man, co-founder of Arcigay) elected with the Green Party
- Titti De Simone (a lesbian woman, former president of Arcilesbica),
- Vladimir Luxuria (a transgender person) both elected with the Communist Refoundation party,
- Franco Grillini (a gay man, former president of Arcigay) elected with the Democrats of the left (Socialdemocrats),
- Alfonso Pecoraro Scanio (a bisexual man) chairperson of the Green party.
