ナチス・ドイツによって迫害を受け殺された同性愛者たちの慰霊碑が、ベルリンのティーアガルテン公園（Tiergarten park）内に完成した。

　ナチス・ドイツに迫害され犠牲となった同性愛者を追悼する記念碑が２７日、ベルリン中心部に完成し除幕式が行われた。虐殺されたユダヤ人の追悼施設に隣接し、近く建設されるロマ（ジプシー）の記念碑とともにナチスの過去を歴史に刻む施設となる。

　自ら同性愛者であることを公言しているベルリンのウォーウェライト市長は「記念碑は過去の悲劇を示すとともに、現在も存在する差別を思い起こさせるものだ」と述べ、同性愛者が社会に受け入れられるよう努力する必要があると訴えた。

　ヒトラー政権下では約５万人の同性愛者が強制収容所に送られるなどし、多くが死亡した。

Germany unveiled a memorial Tuesday to the long-ignored gay victims of the Nazi regime, a monument that also aims to address discrimination today by confronting visitors with an image of a same-sex couple kissing.

The memorial - a sloping gray concrete slab on the edge of the Tiergarten district in Berlin - is a deliberate echo of the vast field of smaller slabs that make up Germany's memorial to Jewish victims of the Holocaust, opened three years ago just across the road.

The Berlin mayor, Klaus Wowereit, who is gay, said at the opening Tuesday that "another part of our work of commemoration is becoming reality."

The designers of the monument included in the pavilion-sized slab a small window that lets visitors see a film of two men kissing.

有名なキンゼイは、人口の４ー５％は同性愛指向であると推測した。したがって、当時のドイツには約二百万の同性愛者が存在したことになり、二、三十万人がピンクトライアングルの印をつけKZ（強制収容所）に囚われていたことは、ほぼ確実である。
この印をつけていた者のすべてが同性愛者であったわけではない。気に入らない人間を破滅させようと思ったら、たとえば結婚していないとか、子供がいないとか、なんらかの密告一つで十分だった。「第１７５a条」（刑法175条）該当者らしいという疑いだけでも、保護拘禁の十分な理由となった。ピンク.トライアングルをつけてKZの悪魔の挽臼に陥った者が、生きてここを出られることはきわめてまれであった。

Memorial for Gays Persecuted by Nazis Opens in Berlin [Deutsche Welle]

While the Nazi persecution of the Jews is well known, for many years there was little public acknowledgement of Nazi atrocities towards homosexuals. Estimates put the number of homosexuals arrested by Nazis at about 54,000 with 7,000 being killed in concentration camps.

"It is not easy for a gay man to live in this country and this society. It's important to remember that this society punished homosexuality for 20 years after National Socialism ended," said Günter Dworek of the Federation of Gays and Lesbians in Germany (LSVD), a driving force behind the project.

ナチ政権下におけるゲイのホロコースト犠牲者の存在は、長らく無視されていた。戦後のドイツが20年にわたって、ナチス時代と同様に、同性愛者を社会的処罰の対象として扱ってきた事実は忘れるべきではない。慰霊碑は、今日まで残る同性愛者への差別をなくすための取り組みでもある。

The monument in the German capital’s Tiergarten Park is a burnished concrete block with a perforation in the centre. A screen has been placed inside. It shows a short film of two men kissing. The footage is expected to be changed every two years.

The monument was designed by two European artists, Michael Almgreen of Denmark and Ingar Dragset from Norway. It cost the city 600,000 euros to build.

参列者は、傾斜のあるコンクリートで創られた慰霊碑の小窓から、同性カップルがキスをしている映像を見ることができる。

しかしあまりに遅すぎた、とゲイの権利擁護団体は語る。『ニューヨークタイムズ』や『ガーディアン』によれば、ホロコーストの最後の生き残りであった Pierre Seel 氏は2005年に亡くなってしまった。迫害から生き延びた人々は、今は、もう誰もいない。

"Germany wants to honour the persecuted and murdered victims, to keep alive the memory of the injustice they suffered," a plaque reads, adding that the monument is meant as "a lasting symbol against intolerance and hostility towards gays and lesbians and against their alienation".

But gay rights campaigners, while welcoming the memorial, said it was an unfortunate consequence of the lengthy struggle to see it constructed, that there were no survivors left to witness its inauguration.

"It is a sad fact that not one of the people persecuted back then is able to be here today," said Günter Dworek, a spokesman for Germany's Lesbian and Gay Association. "In that sense, this monument has come too late." The last known victim died in 2005.
