アメリカ中間選挙の投票日が迫っている最中、米選挙戦名物の「ネガティブ・キャンペーン」も熱を帯びている。中でも話題沸騰なのは、”Harold, Call Me”ADと、それに対抗してつくられた”Ken, Call Me”ADだろう。それぞれ”Race-Baiting”広告と”Gay-Baiting”広告と名付け／名指しされている。
そして目を惹くのが、YouTube がこうした政治的主張を戦わせるメディアとして大いに利用され、熾烈なキャンペーン合戦の舞台になっていることだ。ブロガーがそれに言及し、ある種の雰囲気を形成している。
とりあえず話題の映像を観てみよう。”Harold, Call Me”は最初のMSNBC のニュースの中で取り上げられる。”Ken, Call Me”はその下のやつ。via.towleroad
”Harold, Call Me”がニュースで取り上げられるのは訳がある。”Harold, Call Me”はテネシー州民主党候補のハロルド・フォード氏（Harold Ford）に対する共和党の「アンチ−ハロルド・フォード広告」で、フォード候補が政治家として不適任で「正しくない」（not right）と攻撃している。このアンチ広告で問題となったのが、ブロンドの白人美女が「私は彼とプレイボーイ・パーティで出会ったの」と言い「ハロルド、私に電話してね」と締めくくられるところ。フォード氏は黒人であり、それが人種差別に当たるとして批判が噴出した。

And there is what will, sadly, become the most famous advertisement of this election cycle, the "Harold, call me'' ad run by the Republican National Committee against Rep. Harold Ford (news, bio, voting record) Jr., the Democratic candidate for the Senate from Tennessee. To claim that an ad depicting a pretty blonde woman coming on to an African-American politician does not play on the fears of miscegenation on the part of some whites is to ignore history. My hunch is that the sliminess won't work this year.
一方、そのニュースの中でインタビューに応え弁解めいた発言をしている人物が、テネシー州の共和党全国委員会（Republican National Committee、RNC）の会長ケン・メルマン氏（Ken Mehlman）。”Ken, Call Me”は、そのケン・メルマンに対するネガティブ・キャンペーン広告だ。
ただしこのビデオは民主党が「公式に」製作したものではない。”blogActive.com” や”Proud of Who We Are”などを運営し「攻撃的なリベラル」ゲイ・ブロガーとしてして知られるマイク・ロジャース氏（Mike Rogers） が作製、”Harold, Call Me”の巧緻なパロディになっているのが見事だ。
ここで槍玉に挙げられるのはメルマン氏のセクシュアリティ。というのもメルマン氏は先日、「私はゲイではなくストレートだ」と発言したからだ（RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman: I'm Not Gay）。
Gay Ad ”Ken, Call Me”（blogActive parody of Ford ad and Ken Mehlman）は、それをあてこすって、短髪でタンクトップを着た──いかにもゲイといった感じの──青年が「ケン、僕に電話してね」と言って締めくくられる。

しかもだ。この「ブロンド美女」と「ゲイ」の組み合わせには、奥深い背景がある。
ハロルド・フォード氏は（ストレートの）ポルノ映画製作者から献金を受けていた。共和党の攻撃──例えばサングラスの男性の発言、そしてプレイボーイ発言──はその含意があったはずだ。しかし、RNCとケン・メルマン氏は、ゲイ・ポルノ製作者＆ディストリビューターから献金を受けていた事実がここにきて発覚した。

Why is this relevant? Because the RNC went after Tennessee Democrat Harold Ford last week claiming he took money from Hollywood porn movie producers. Leave it to the Republicans to one up the Democrats and not just take porn money, but take GAY PORN money :-) I love Republicans. They make me smile.
アウティングを武器とする「攻撃的なリベラル」ゲイ・ブロガー Mike Rogers の blogActive.com だけあって、”Ken, Call Me”は、なかなか辛辣に──むろんそれはとても効果的に考えられたものだ──作られているのだが、「ケン、僕に電話してね」と言うゲイがキュートだ、というのがいくつかのゲイ・ブログでの感想だ。
