英文学の重鎮ジェイン・オースティン（Jane Austen、1775-1817） の作品を少しだけ変更して18もの出版社に送り、「オースティンが現代に生きていれば、果たした彼女は出版契約を獲得できるのか」と実験した話。例えば『高慢と偏見』（Pride and Prejudice）は『First Impressions』とタイトルを変え、有名な冒頭の文章をそのまま使用したという。AFPBBの記事より。
だが、盗作の事実に気がついたのは1社のみ。この結果についてLassman氏は、ガーディアン（Guardian）紙に対して「がくぜんとした。歴史上最も偉大な作家の1人だというのに、オースティンの作品だと気づいたのは1社だけだった」と語った。
同氏の元には、大手出版社を含む複数の出版社から、不採用通知が届いたという。

この記事の書き方だと「偉大な作家を不採用にしたこと」が問題だったのか、それともオースティンの作品だと──すなわち「盗作」だと見抜けなかったことが問題なのか、どちらに重点を置いているのかよくわからない。まあ、どちらにしても、『Jane Austen Festival』のプロモーションなんだろう──「人を試す」という、ずいぶんと高慢なやり方だと思うが。
実際、ジェイン・オースティンってそれほど面白いのかな。個人的な偏見だが、ジェイン・オースティンって「退屈」で、結局『高慢と偏見』も『エマ』も読み通せなかったし。
で、nofrills さんが『Guardian』の記事を紹介しているので読んでみた。オースティンの『Pride and Prejudice』（高慢と偏見）とその偽作Alison Laydee作『First Impressions』の違いが載っている。

別に出版社の肩を持つつもりはないが……この『First Impressions』を読んで「面白い！ これは売れるぞ」と思う人がどれほどいるのだろうか？ せめてさ、変更するなら、「It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.」は「It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a boyfriend.」ぐらいにすべきじゃないかな、現代なら。
