先日の米中間選挙で12年ぶりに民主党が上下両院を制し、来年1月より、下院議長就任が確実となったナンシー・ペロシ院内総務（Nancy Pelosi、66、House Democratic Leader）。米下院議長は、副大統領に次いで、大統領死亡などの場合の継承順位が２番目という重責だ。そのペロシ氏について記しておきたい。
産経新聞の記事「米史上初の女性下院議長、ペロシ氏いかなる人か」によれば、なんと言っても注目すべきは、
ペロシ氏は人権、福祉政策を得意分野とし、例えば、同性愛に寛容な選挙区の空気を反映してブッシュ政権の同性婚規制には強く反対している。「サンフランシスコ・リベラル」としての顔だ。
そして、
大学時代に知り合った夫のポール氏はカリフォルニア州の富裕なイタリア系投資家。夫婦とも熱心なカトリック教徒だ。サンフランシスコでも民主党の支持活動を続け、５人の子育てが終わった４６歳の時、同党の地盤を託されて政界入りした。
彼女がカトリック教徒であることは覚えておいてよいだろう。
他に重要なポイントとして、
華僑系の多い選挙区事情もあり、１９８９年の天安門事件では中国を強く非難、中国からの移民規制の緊急緩和を求める「ペロシ法案」を共和党議員とともに提出するなど、人権、通商問題では対中強硬派である。

One of Pelosi's first legislative victories was the creation of the Housing Opportunities for People with AIDS program. She has also worked to accelerate development of an HIV vaccine, expand access to Medicaid for people living with HIV, and increase funding for the Ryan White CARE Act, the Minority HIV/AIDS Initiative and other programs vital to people living with or at risk for HIV/AIDS.

The Republicans have already sought to play on conservative voters' fears by portraying her as the embodiment of everything they dislike most about the Democrats, with campaign ads suggesting she will raise taxes, help illegal immigrants and back same-sex marriage.
Civil liberties
Pelosi has voted for protection of civil liberties and First Amendment rights. She voted against laws banning flag-burning. She has voted for and been a strong supporter of the separation of church and state. She has also been an opponent of the Federal Marriage Amendment and supports the enforcement of the Fourteenth Amendment barring discrimination based on race.
